Nowadays, we see many attempts of moving conventional technologies onto the web. IP-telephony, however, is one service we’re seeing moving from the web to traditional handsets. Skype is easily one of the most popular IP-telephony services used by many around the world. Having set a strong foothold in the internet/instant messaging segment of users, Skype now attempts to capture those who couldn’t be bothered to setup a computer to talk on the phone. Instead, we now see Skype as a value added feature on more and more handsets that do away with a computer at all.
While there are devices that do nothing but Skype, Aztech’s V500 is firstly a standard wireless DECT phone - but with the not-so-standard Skype application built in. The base unit of the V500 connects to both your home/office RJ-11 phone line as well as the Internet via an RJ-45 Ethernet port. The handset communicates wirelessly with the base via DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications ) standard and is powered by two rechargeable AAA bateries.

The built-in software provides a full-featured Skype interface on the phone’s color screen. Simply enter your Skype account details and you’re ready to go. The phone also lets you create a new account if you don’t already have one. Once logged in, you can manage your contact list, change your online status and see who’s onlin. The V500 allows you to make both free and paid SkypeOut calls. You can set a preference for the phone to use the land land-line or SkypeOut when manually dialling numbers. Call quality was nearly flawless, depending on your connection quality.
Aztech’s V500-DS DECT/Skype phone makes a great addition to the growing list of Skype -phones and will work great at home and in the office.
