Is it worth it to waste desk space for a big imaging machine? If the machine is the Canon Pixma MP610, then the answer is “yes”.
Offering standalone print, scan and copy functions through its easy-to-navigate liquid crystal display (LCD) and control panel, you will rather have the hefty model on your side than somewhere under the table.
At 450 millimetres by 389mm by 188mm, the Canon Pixma MP610 does need a lot of desk space. But the control panel, rear tray, output tray and cassette are tuckable into its body, leaving no pieces jutting out, unless you want them to.
Once hauled out the box, the hardware and software setup is quite simple. The Canon Pixma MP610 only asks for a bit of time alone (specifically 13 minutes without you interfering) and two sheets of paper to automatically conduct first-time calibration before connection to the computer through the USB 2.0 interface.
As it delivers the output for printhead alignment, it becomes obvious that the Canon Pixma MP610 is one fast, silent worker. Paper is also loaded in smoothly without any mechanical ruckus.
As a printer capable of producing 9,600 by 2,400 dots per inch resolution, the Canon Pixma MP610 functions well with and without the PC connected. Without a PC connected, the menu on the LCD is easy to use and comprehensive. You can also navigate the items using the Easy-Scroll Wheel and other dedicated buttons onboard.
With a PC, you can make use of the Solutions Menu interface to quickly get tasks such as printing albums, stickers or labels. While conducting tests, the Canon Pixma MP610 fools you into thinking that it is a home colour laser with its speed and delivers just as commendable output.
As for test results, the Canon Pixma MP610 delivered three pages of a black text document in 18 seconds while a three-page document combining colour text and graphics was ready in 39 seconds. Text on both sets of document looks crisp due to the use of pigment-based black ink while the colours of the graphics appear solid.
Excellent photo printing with borderless option makes the Canon Pixma MP610 worth investing in.
To cater to camera users, the Canon Pixma MP610 design includes PictBridge support and card slots for CompactFlash, Microdrive, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Secure Digital, SD High Capacity and MultiMedia Card. Other cards are readable with the use of an adapter.
While your high-resolution photos (six megapixels or higher) look vivid and sharp, even your three-megapixel files look good enough to grace your walls when printed on photo paper at sizes as big as A4. When working standalone, you can choose the layout and perform Auto Image Fix to produce better printouts.
The Canon Pixma MP610 is also convertible into a wireless printer with the addition of a Bluetooth option. But the model is equipped with IrDA version 1.2 to work with enabled camera phones, personal digital assistants and notebook computers. Although you can only transfer and print one by one, the tool will come in handy when you need to quickly print a JPEG file.
Double-sided printing is a valuable option that comes with the Canon Pixma MP610 printing function. Printing items such as photo album and scrapbook pages is easy, and you can also make use of the bundled solutions.
Another printing activity offered by the machine is disk labelling. Using the CD-LabelPrint utility, you can print images and text onto the label side of a printable DVD or CD.
The scanner unit comes with Canon’s Z-Lid, which lets you scan pages within thicker materials such as books and magazines. The scanner produces files swiftly onto your screen, allowing you to save, edit or open them in another application.
The Canon Pixma MP610 delivers fast monochrome and colour scan copies. And you can always rely on the machine’s control panel to quickly produce multiple copies of a page.
Another cool thing about copying is that the feature is quite flexible, giving you output in many sizes with its capability to enlarge or reduce a page, two- or four-in-one copy, frame erase, trimming and masking.
Unfortunately, it does not offer film scanning, which many photographers would love to have onboard.
Double-sided copies can be produced with the Canon Pixma MP610, making the model a good help in a small
office-home office (SOHO) setting. With the duplexing feature, you can quickly produce copies of brochures, flyers and similar documents.
All in, the Canon Pixma MP610 is a good solution for home imaging and performs just as commendably in a SOHO setting. For more standalone convenience, you can add a Bluetooth option in your accessories list.
