Casio may be better known for its durable wristwatches but they sure would like you to see its latest compact-form camera, the Casio Exilim EX-V7, in the same regard.
The Casio EX-V7 aims to debunk the common perception that compact cameras can’t manage decent zoom distances as bulkier models can. The Casio EX-V7 manages this through an internally zooming lens paired with a mirror along the width of the camera, delivering an amazing 7x optical zoom for those extreme close-ups.
Aside from the Casio EX-V7’s astounding zoom capabilities, Casio has also crammed in a ton of features such as its new Exilim Engine 2.0 processor which purportedly enhances autofocus, brightens and sharpens colours, speeds up image processing, and does well nigh almost anything save the dishes. Besides standard features like anti-shake technology and ISO, white balance and exposure control, Casio’s novelty ‘Best Shot” feature makes a remarkable return. This time you have 33 different scene options to choose from, letting you try out nifty scene features like the “ID Photo” mode that duplicates your face into multiple passport-sized photos for easy printing.

Video capture is smooth with the AF assist lamp doubling as a movie light for video shoots. The Casio EX-V7’s H.264 recording format means more space efficiency to record high quality widescreen format videos. The 7x zoom capability can also be utilized in video mode, which is an achievement of sorts for Casio. Stereo sound recording is also available, though the difference is not tremendous considering both mics are barely an inch apart.
It’s not all a bed of roses however, as the Casio EX-V7’s picture quality can get rather grainy and noisy when extended to the full zoom length. Charging might pose a problem as well, as you can only charge the Casio EX-V7 through its provided cradle. The anti-shake function isn’t much help when you’re trying to shoot something at full zoom length either.
For its slightly above-average price, the Casio EX-V7’s image quality somewhat lets it down, yet its myriad features and overall packaging do more than redeem it. A worthy compact camera option.
