One thing that makes DSLRs a notch above compact camera is the ability to create the bokeh effect or depth of field, an artistic photography effect that makes the object sharp and the background blur. But the Fujifilm F80EXR changes that with its Pro Focus mode which is one of the 18 Scene Positions available.
Featuring a 12-megapixels Super CCD EXR Sensor with 10x zoom and a 27mm wide-angle lens, the F80EXR has an ample 3-inch LCD and a solid body that is comfortable to hold; neither too thick nor too thin. A Shooting Mode dial is located at the top right of the LCD and playback button, F-mode button, D-Pad, display/Back button and a dedicated face detection button right below it.
There are 8 shooting modes available, Auto, EXR Auto, Program, Manual, Movie, Scene Position, Natural Light and Natural & Flash. The EXR Auto mode is Fujifilm’s proprietary mode that comprises of Resolution priority (HR), High ISO & Low Noise (SN) and D-Range priority (DR).
Photos taken with the EXR Auto mode had sharp quality and vivid colors especially in HR and DR priority but for SN, shaky hands will result in blurring. Video capture at 720p HD on the FX80EXR is amazing for a compact camera with fine details picked up easily and hardly any noise except in low light. The audio however is just so-so, nothing to shout about.
When using Natural & Flash, the F80EXR captures two shots continuously with flash and without flash. This function is convenient because you can select either of the outcomes instantly eliminating the need to switch on and off the flash and taking two photos.
The Aperture Priority AE is buried within the Program mode, takes awhile to find it if you are not familiar with the menus. Aperture is only limited to F3.3 and F9 only even in Manual mode.
If you have pets, specifically cats or dogs, there is a cat and dog recognition function in the Scene Position that detects the faces of your furry friends.
Another cool feature would be the Face Recognition function that not only detects faces like other point-and-shoots but is able to remember faces. First, you have to register the person’s face and then you can add their names, birthdays and group such as friend, family or partner. Whenever you take a photo, it will detect the person’s face. You can select and save up to eight faces in the Face recognition function.
Zooming in to the maximum capacity on the F80EXR surprisingly does not produce much noise as expected. All in, the Fujifilm F80EXR is an above average compact with the ability to created depth of field images and record HD quality video.
