I purchased the NEX-5 from Inkley’s (Ritz) in Salt Lake City, UT four weeks ago. I also took them up on the offer to buy the 16mm for $99 two days after I purchased the original unit. Unfortunately I did not open it for a week, as I bought it kneejerk to replace my Canon 5D MkII (yes I know which direction I took), having not yet read the reviews.

Having now used the unit for three weeks, I am completely in love with the camera, and due to it’s size it goes with me everywhere; something the 5D MkII did not do. The menu system is simple stupid, fast, and very functional. The functions I use most are the panorama and HDR. I am very much looking forward to the 18-200mm lens, although the estimated street ($800) makes it less desirable, and points me to an adapter and a standard 70-300mm Sony or Canon lens.

The auto focus is fast enough for what I do, and the default white balance also works for me. Prior to this camera my daily use was the Fujifilm HS10 with the 30x zoom. Unfortunately that camera was left on a train by my daughter traveling from Venice to Rome. On the flip side of its disappearance was the fact that any image write took way to long, and discouraged using it a full 40% of the time. Comparatively the NEX-5 writes to SD much faster, but when you take .jpg and raw, it will slow you down to the point of being somewhat disruptive to a normal creative flow. I suspect this will be remedied by an upcoming firmware revision.

Wished it had: the ability to rotate the display 180 so when transporting the display would be protected. A little more room between the lens and the grip; it suits smaller hands for grip ergonomics. Faster write speeds. More accessories upon release (cases, lenses, Sony filters). APS-C dust removal (but that would make it at least as large as the Olympus). A-Mount integration to take advantage of a ready built lens set.

What’s cool: Size, E-mount (very solid, perfect fit), no hot shoe modular screw-in accessories (flash, mic, viewfinder = so far), low strap mounts which allows for and accepts the lens being strait down when worn (keeps the display from rubbing when you walk), THE MENU, three button back with adaptive control wheel and button, dedicated movie button, throw-back on/off switch, panorama, HDR, display quality (in all lighting), 7fps, that its driving traditional SLR and DSLR folks insane with review envy.

In spite of the fact the magnification does not come close, and its not an “in class” camera to the Fujifilm HS10, this is a far superior camera. There are times when I miss my full frame sensor, 21mp resolution, and L series lenses, but I don’t miss carrying around 25 lbs of camera and lenses in hopes of reconfiguring my life to get that one shot. My NEX-5 is now a traveling companion and it always ready for that shot. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
