Gigabyte is one of the largest PC hardware manufacturers in the world and is most well known for their motherboards. So what are they doing making power supplies? Well, it’s not common to see companies diversifying their product portfolios and besides, PSUs are still considered PC peripherals.
The Odin GT 800W is the flagship model in the GT series. This PSU is a modular unit, which means that apart from the mandatory power connectors to the motherboard, the auxiliary power cables which provide power to other components can be detached. This reduces clutter inside the casing. The Odin GT 800W is 80 Plus certified, which means that it operates at over 80% efficiency (energy is otherwise lost mainly through heat) and is suitable for SLI (multiple graphics card) rigs.
With a maximum of 62 Amperes (A) to the four 12 Volt rails, this PSU packs a real punch. Dual (we didn’t have three) 8800GTS cards with multiple hard disks will pose no problem for this PSU. However, we did find that the non-modular connectors can be a bit messy. Unlike some PSUs which are totally modular, the unused non detachable cables have to be tied up and shoved into some nook or cranny within the casing. Also, the 24-pin motherboard power connector is quite short, so if you have a full tower casing which mounts the PSU at the bottom, you could run into some cabling problems.
The 14cm fan ensures that this PSU runs as silently as possible and you can even see how it’s doing via software. If you have the cash to spare, and a rear kicking multi-GPU super computer to power, the Odin GT 800W will do it for you.
