Western Digital knows their stuff. Their external hard drive line speaks for themselves in design and reliability. The new My Passport Studio is no different.
With its all white exterior, it fits well with the Apple family. The sleek design is very inviting for anyone to use it. An additional feature is the e-ink display at the front of the case itself. It tells users at a glance the capacity of the drive at any given time, without the need to power the drive up, thanks to the e-ink technology.
The build quality is also good without and shakes for rattles when handling the drive itself. Along with the design of the case, the design of the cable is also a noteworthy feature here as it comes with a Firewire 400 to 800 cable convertor, making users with either cable type life easier.
One caveat of the hard drive is that it is tailored to use exclusively with one system only – whether Mac or PC, not both. This is due to the different file system that the two environment use. However the software is intelligent enough to hide the drive in an unusable system so that the chance of accidental data corruption will be minimal. The software also doubles as a management software for the drive itself. The transfer rate of the drive is quite speedy – on the USB2.0 and the Firewire connections.
Good for those who are looking for more space at work, especially for the Macs.
