The J5508 is from HP’s Officejet line of All-in-Ones printers. It combines the functions of a printer, scanner, copier and fax into one device. Unique to the J5500-series is that it comes with an actual telephone handset which can be attached to its side. Thus, the Officejet J5508 is perfectly suited as a SOHO work machine.
Setting up the Officejet J5508 involves the installation of the usual HP suite of software and plugging into a standard USB port. For fax functionality, you can also plug in your phone line directly into the printer.
The Officejet J5508 uses a two-catridge inkjet system that prints both black and color output. The scanning system consists of a flatbed scanner with an optical sensor at 1,200 dpi resolution. The maximum paper size for both prints and scans for the Officejet J5508 is A4.
To feed paper to the Officejet J5508, you attach a rather quirky ‘tray’ which is little more than a flat piece of plastic to the front of the printer. This holds a maximum of 50 sheets of paper, but feels rather insecure as the paper simply sits on top of the feeder with little to hold it in place. On the plus-side, the flatbed scanner does have a 50-sheet auto-feeder which work nicely.
Performance-wise, we managed to get Officejet J5508 to print black and white drafts at 16.6 pages per minute. The draft quality was still very sharp and legible, unlike other printers that dramatically drop quality in draft prints. In color printing, the Officejet J5508 printed color drafts at paltry 2.3 pages per minute. We noticed that the actual printing operation wasn’t actually that slow, but there were incredibly long pauses in between each page where the printer seemed to be doing something to the cartridge caddy. This cause the unremarkable results in our color print test.
The Officejet J5508 is also capable of making quality photo prints given the appropriate photo paper. A full-quality 4R photo took a little over 3 minutes to produce. This was using the max-resolution setting which prints at 1200 dpi - double the normal 600 dpi. At this setting, prints were very sharp and detailed.
The Officejet J5508 is a capable printer that does more than just print. Although we had issues with the waiting in between pages, the combination of functions make the Officejet J5508 a useful tool in your business environment.
