We have yet another product from Logitech. The Logitech-X540 is an older model that came out at the end of 2006, but has been known to be a good set of speakers. Just like the Altec Lansing, the Logitech-X540 only has the six channel input and auxiliary input. The AUX input is situated on the dial knob for easy access next to the headphone jack. Logitech also uses 3.5mm output jacks instead of RCA ones for convenience.
The Logitech-X540 satellite speakers are relatively light. Like the Z-5500’s speakers, the Logitech-X540’s speakers can be mounted on the wall easily by swiveling the stand. Instead of the open ended wiring, Logitech chose to go with RCA cabling. The cables attached to the speakers can’t be removed though, which limits the extent of which you can place your speakers. And it’s worse when the cables are short too. This would imply that you’re restricted to PCs only. The system doesn’t come with a remote or a LED control panel. Rather, it uses a dial knob to change the volume while a smaller knob is used for the bass control. On the right side, there is a “Matrix” button which creates 5.1 surround sound even when connected to a 2-channel source, much like the Altec Lansing’s stereo/surround button. Other than those, there isn’t much flexiblity over the control of the individual speakers as well as other sound effects. The subwoofer measures at 11.25″ x 6.5″ x 9.75″ (HxWxD), so you can roughly gauge its size. The interesting part of the sub is where Logitech placed the ported driver. It’s located right at the bottom of the sub, this downward firing bass concept apparently delivers uniform sound coverage and maximises the effect. With only 25 watts (RMS) feeding to the driver, we can only wonder how much that’s going to affect the sound.
Sound quality form the Logitech-X540 was fantastic. It actually sounded much better than some high-end speakers out there. The tweeters produced sharp and crisp treble tones while mid range sounded good as well. Although the subwoofer is smaller than some, it still packs a punch considering it’s only powerd by 25 watts (RMS).
This sound system is one heck of deal. It’s just too bad that it lacks control over the sound effect and individual speakers volumes. But this won’t be too much of an issue as overall sound clarity is great.
