The Logitech Z-5500 is the latest high-end 5.1 digital speaker system that is THX-certified. It supports a wide range of formats such as, Dolby Digital, DTS and DTS 96/24. It’s one of the first speakers systems to support the 96 KHz sampling rate and a 24-bit depth, which is the format most studios use for their master recordings. So you can expect great sound quality.
The satellite speakers are quite light and their stands can be rotated for mounting purposes. However, the cables are attached to the speakers, so if your room is quite large then you might have a problem. The good thing is that the cables are pretty long. In addition, Logitech supplies the SoundTouch Control Centre, which gives you quite a few source inputs, from a digital optical jack, digital coaxial jack, 6 channel jacks, and a stereo mini jack at the side. This allows you to plug in six devices at one time. Another plus is the large assortments of settings you can play around with. You can modify each specific sound effect and control the volume of the satellite speakers and the subwoofers too. One thing though, the knob seemed a bit hard to turn. Fortunately, there wasn’t any delay in term of responsiveness. The subwoofer is the last big piece. It has a 10-inch wide drivers and a 4-inch port at the side of the enclosure. The amp delivers 188 watts (RMS) to the subwoofer, so you can imagine the power of the bass from this one.
Testing it was a blast. The audio quality was excellent; it felt like a live concert when playing music. The bass was superb to the point where the whole ground was shaking. Thankfully, the reproduction of the bass wasn’t messy or sloppy. The higher notes sounded crisp and sharp indicating that the treble was good. Mid-range, however, could have been better; it was slightly disconnected with the treble and bass but still sounded pretty okay.
Overall, the Logitech Z-5500 is a nice piece of equipment. Not only does it score well in terms of audio quality, the extra versatile control center and user-friendly design make it a great product as a whole. But with good quality comes high pricing. Nevertheless, you get what you paid for.
