Looking a bit like a scaled down Nintendo Wii, the pearl white Videomate V200 Standalone TV Box is what most people who have a monitor but no TV would want to have, especially if they are looking to play with consoles.
The V200, which is not much bigger than a typical DVD Case, comes with an IR remote control (complete with 2AAA batteries), the stand, a power adapter, a nine pin MINI-Din to 15-pin D-Dub connector patch cable, and audio patch cable with 3.5mm phone jack on the side and a quick start up guide to get you started.
We tested the V200 by hooking it up to a PS2 and a BenQ G900W monitor. Setting up the V200 wasn’t difficult, the stand fits quite snugly and there’s no software needed to get it running. But because the V200 is so light, it does have some stability issues once the tangles of wires have been plugged in.
Supporting all monitor sizes from 15 inches and up, monitor size is not an issue as the V200 can support up to 1680 x 1050 and 1600 x 1200 resolution. Also the OSD was easy to use and quite self explanatory.
As vibrant as the color was, we didn’t find the image to be as sharp as we would have liked it. It was likely due to the cable branching, but otherwise the ratios were good and the audio output was satisfactory.
Overall, the V200 is a good alternative to those overpriced large TV boxes for use, be it for playing your console to using your monitor as a TV.
