Philips GoGear personal media player with FullSound have been around since last year, but only just recently have they updated their product line to include PMPs that are designed for a specific segment of the market. Previous GoGear PMPs only had a single chassis with variations in storage capacity and features such as Bluetooth and Philips patented FullSound technology. Now, we have a whole new line-up with upcoming models featuring FullSound2 technology and more storage. The Philips GoGear Aria is one of these new models and comes with high-end Philips sound isolation earphones.
The Aria is an ultra-light personal media player (PMP) that looks like a slightly smaller version of previous GoGear PMPs. It retains the glossy black finish surrounding the 2.0” backlit color LCD display and covering the control side on the right. The entire control side panel is actually the control for options, returning and directional controls for left and right.
In the centre of the control panel are the up and down buttons while in the centre of these buttons is the play/pause button. The hold and lock switch is placed on the bottom side along with the mini-USB port and 3.5mm jack. Volume controls are placed on the top side while the mic is on the right.
The Aria comes in 8GB and 4GB versions. At 47g the Aria is definitely one of the lightest PMPs in its class. Although its 2.0” display does require you to squint a little when watching movies, colors are clear with no motion lag. The Aria is also one of the few GoGear models to come with a text reader which display nice text.
In terms of music and sound quality, the Philips Aria is definitely one of the better PMPs. Even without great sound isolation earphones, the Aria’s FullSound adds a few more layers of audio to your music with great bass and excellent treble plus crystal clear clarity in between. The sound isolation earbuds are a great condition as they work extremely well and would cost a sizeable amount on their own. On a full charge, the Aria can last for 30 hours worth of music or 6 hours of video.
The Aria allows users to enjoy MP3, WMA, FM radio and WMV, MPEG4 and H.264 videos. Videos have to be converted to SMV though, but the bundled convertor works quite well. As an extra value added feature the media convertor can now handle Youtube videos as well. The Aria also allows you to listen to FM radio as well as record audio.
The Philips GoGear Aria 4GB is an exceptional music player with additional functions for video and text. Video on the device is smooth and looks great. The text function is also a good condition. Although 8GB is good enough for most users, but for its price, the Aria is definitely meant more for the audiophile than your average listener as the FullSound technology helps to make it worth your while.
