Nikon has just officially announced the D700 DSLR, but camera fans will probably already know this, as photos of the camera and its specifications have been floating around on the Net for a couple of weeks now.
The big deal with the D700 is that it’s a full-frame DSLR, i.e. it has a 12.1-megapixel image sensor the same size as 35mm film.
In fact, it’s essentially the same sensor as the one found on the more expensive Nikon D3.
However, unlike the D3, the D700 has a more compact body (about the same size as the smaller sensor D300 ) and is priced comfortably between the pro-level D3 and the slightly more consumer-oriented D300.
The D700’s full-frame sensor also inherits the same crazy high ISO boost settings of up to 25600, although the normal ISO settings top out at ISO 6400.
Other than that, the D700 has many of the features of the D300 — a 5fps (frames per second) top continuous shooting speed (up to 8fps with the MB-D10 grip), a built-in pop-up flash, 51-point autofocus sensor, 920,000-dot 3in LCD monitor and even features “sensor shake” image sensor cleaning.
The D700 also has Live View mode, with the same autofocus options as the D3 and D300, but additionally, Live View can be mapped to another button so that it can be activated together with the self-timer.
The nifty Virtual Horizon feature of the D3 has also carried over into the D700 as well, and just like Live View, the D700 has its own spin on the feature.
Virtual Horizon can now be used in conjunction with Live View as well, something which was not possible on the D3.
The list price for the D700 is US$2,999 and it is expected to hit stores by the end of this month.
