After using the Nokia E50 for nearly a year now, I’ve been looking forward to an upgrade. This comes in the form of the new Nokia E51, which crams in even more functionality into the same slim form factor of its predecessor.
Beneath its sturdy metal and plastic casing lies and ARM processor running at 369MHz, a big leap from the 220MHz on the E50. In addition, it now comes with 130MB of internal storage. There’s a slot for a Micro-SD which takes up to 4GB SDHC cards. The 2-inch QVGA (240 by 320 pixels) TFT LCD can display 16.7 million colors and support for 3G networks has also been added. As if that weren’t enough, the E51 also has Wi-Fi support built-in. No doubt those who have an unlimited packet data subscription would probably find it more convenient, but Wi-Fi provides faster speeds for web browsing.
Despite all these improvements, the E51 isn’t any larger than its predecessor. In fact, it is actually around 12% smaller, volume-wise. It also weighs 4 grams lighter at 100g. Many of the newer phone now use Nokia’s BP-6MT Li-Ion battery pack (1,050mAh) compared to the older E50’s BL-5C (970mAh). Talk time is rated at 4.4 hours while standby is up to 13 days (dependent on network).
Power users who prefer a monoblock phone should consider getting the E51. The smallish screen aside, it probably has everything a person who’s constantly on the move would ever need.
