Android is the fastest growing mobile OS all over the world. With Android-based products coming left and right, how does one choose which is the best for his or her usage? HTC is one of the forerunners of churning out said devices, and after producing a whole line-up of Android based devices, the Desire is deemed their latest and greatest for the market.
At first glance you will notice that it looks similar to the Google Nexus One phone. This is no coincidence as HTC also built the Nexus One so the design has rubbed off here and there. Even so, there are some major differences between the two phones, Firstly, the Desire uses an optical trackpad instead of the trackball that the Nexus One uses. This is also the first HTC that features the latest Éclair build of the Android mobile OS.
Build-wise the Desire is very well, desirable. The matte-aluminum back feels very exquisite to the touch, making the phone feel very high class. However, the piece de resistance is the large AMOLED screen at the front. Measuring at 3.7-inch, it is so beautiful to the extent the term “You need to see it to believe it” applies here. Sharp images, gorgeous range of colors, coupled with the capacitive screen that the Desire employs, makes this a very enjoyable phone to navigate.
The camera on the phone is also quite adequate, with the images looking good and not blurry like some other camera phones out there. When you run programs, it is helped by the speedy 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Thanks to this processor, program speed by like bullet trains and transitions between pages and/or applications was smooth.
Something new with Android 2.1 is the addition of Google search, and it is executed nicely on the Desire. The mic is sensitive enough to pick up even my not-so-stellar English pronunciations. It does two things – search items in the phone and also the WWW through Google. When you are connected to a fast mobile broadband network, searches come out instantaneously.
For mobile warriors, here is a feature that would excite you – you can tether your Desire to your computer to use it as a broadband modem. Just install the sync program, tick the ‘Share Internet’ option and boom – you are wired to the net, wirelessly. The only downside here is that it doesn’t do it via the built-in Wi-Fi, only through the included USB cable unlike its cousin the HD2.
