I have discovered one thing about HTC smartphones. Sometimes they’re spot on about creating truly impressive product and sometimes they come out with a product that may not be as popular as its other siblings. One of the products that in my opinion, does not match it other more popular siblings would have to be the HTC HD Mini. Granted, I have not tried its larger version before but I feel that it is not as amazing as the HTC Legend as well as the other Android-based HTC smartphones.
Powered by the infamous Windows Mobile 6.5, the fact that it uses this operating system made me wary. But HTC, being the brilliant smartphone maker it is, has managed to hide the Windows OS within its Sense UI, so the experience is not as painful (sorry, Microsoft). I do have to say that the build quality of the HD Mini is excellent; its construction feels durable and it is suited for users who have a very rugged lifestyle or are simply accident-prone. Just please don’t toss the mini into the water to test this theory.
The back is made of a solid rubber material with four screws at each corner and once you pry opens the back cover; you will be greeted by a bright yellow interior which brought a smile to my face. To slide in your SIM, you need to take out the battery which I deem as unnecessary hassle. The front of the phone is fully glass with five touch-sensitive buttons at the bottom, Call, Home, Start, Back and End keys. HTC HD mini’s UI is intuitive and easy to use although the capacitive screen can be unresponsive at times.
The speaker is located too far on top of the phone so if you’re using it for the first time you have to remember to bring it at ear-range so you can hear the person on the other end. The camera is average, I didn’t like the keyboard, and the virtual keys were too small. I feel more could have been done with the virtual keyboard, for example tapping keys isn’t the only way to input text and especially with such a small screen, HTC shouldn’t have been content with it.
The redeeming factor of the HD mini is probably its pocketable size and overall user friendly function.
