The talk of the town these days in terms of movie contents and displays is none other than High Definition. This is what HTC is targeting with its ultra cool Touch HD.
Built with one of the biggest screen on a mobile device, there are no physical buttons on the frontal part of the Touch HD. Below the splendid 3.8 inch screen are four touch sensitive buttons and when pressed, gives the users a haptic feedback.
I don’t delve into its TouchFlo 3D user interface or its tweaked Opera Mini web browser as these features are already common on HTC devices. I will go straight into the brilliant screen. I have never seen a screen as crisp as this before on a mobile device, let alone one of the largest one I have reviewed.
Being targeted at hard core video users, the Touch HD’s video quality wasn’t as good as expected. I playback a 640 x 360, 30 fps MP4 file and the video was jerky although the audio was fine. I played a lower frame rate video (12fps) with the same resolution, a higher bit rate and another video at 320 x 240 resolution video with 30fps and it ran smoothly.
If I encoded the same video that was jerky into DivX file and a set higher bit rate then everything ran fine. All the other videos played smoothly as well if encoded into DivX format. So I suggest that HD users who really want to make use of the 3.8 inch screen for videos encoded before loading it into the Touch HD.
Beside the slight hiccup on video playback, the screen is just superb for browsing through photos as it is bright and crisp. The huge screen estate is also great for browsing the Internet as there is less scrolling and more content on the screen.
I liked the huge screen on the Touch HD. The Internet and pictures viewing experience is superb with the device but the video playback is a little of a letdown. Encoding the videos in DivX solves the problem but that is an extra step, and I’m lazy.
Pros: Huge screen, Touch screen with haptic feedback
Cons: Play smoothly only with DivX conversion
