If we’re to reinterpret the HTC Touch2 as a Hollywood movie sequel, it’s got it all; revamped design, new features, and a new core powering the phone’s direction (cue in Windows Mobile 6.5). And, with all of this amalgamated, we’re also glad to announce that the HTC Touch2 is a good successor to the Touch and Touch 3G.
The Touch 2 sports a sleek design, sizing just right to the palm of your hand. At the bottom of the phone sits four buttons for answer/decline calls, home, menu and back, and like the HTC Touch Pro 2 a touch-sensitive zoom bar is featured above it. At the left side are the micro-SD slot and volume control, and the top side features a 35mm jack. We really like how the phone looks; the size fits perfectly and everything is within the reach of the fingers. Bonus points for the 35mm jack.
Buttons aside, everything ran on a touch-screen interface. The Touch2 features a lot of functionalities for an entry level device. You’ll find that it supports 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, which covers all of the connectivity concerns. A big bummer, however, is the lack of an accelerometer, which meant no horizontal touch-screen keyboard and other tilting functions.
Additionally, the Touch2 ships in with the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, bringing along its slew of features like the Microsoft MyPhone backup service and the upcoming Windows Marketplace. The 6.5 user interface flows naturally and is, thankfully much easier and accessible, but we’re still detecting constant legs while accessing around the phone, which can be frustrating sometimes.
The Touch2 features a 3.2 megapixels camera, merely decent at best. Our initial test shots were muddled by motion blur and odd colouring. We also noted that the screen is low-res in display quality and while not detrimental to utilizing the phone, becomes a gripe whenever viewing pictures or videos.
The HTC Touch2 is a great entry-level Smartphone packed with great design and enough features to satisfy everyone, and the inclusion of Windows Mobile 6.5 eases the accessibility and user interface. Sadly, the lack of an accelerometer and the persistent interface lag mars what that is otherwise a worthy successor to its predecessors.
