The Dell Wasabi is not some green stuff where you eat with your sushi. It’s a very portable photo printer that needs no ink at all. Yes, no ink at all.
Built just slightly larger than an oversized PDA, the Wasabi has a large clear windows, which doubles as a cover for its paper feeder while the prints are delivered at the bottom of the Wasabi. They aren’t many controls for the Wasabi, only a power button and another “reprint” button, which mean that there is a small storage in the printer itself.
Like we said earlier, the Wasabi doesn’t need ink to print which means you’ll need special paper to print and ZINK is the only one providing it at the moment. As far as we know, ZINK only has 2 x 3 inch paper and it only works on the Wasabi. The ZINK paper also doubles as a sticker so you can stick it anywhere you want. Just insert the paper into the Wasabi and it’s ready to go.
You can send photos directly to the Wasabi even without pairing your device to it. We tried sending photos from mobile phones and notebooks and it worked flawlessly! At the side of the Wasabi is a USB port where you can plug in your camera and use its PictBridge feature to print from your camera itself.
In our test, the print took about 35 to 40 seconds on average to print. Spooling the pictures to the printer was fast too. An 8MB photo sent via Bluetooth only took about 15 seconds.
It’s not fair to compare the print quality of the Wasabi to the other photo printers since this is a totally different product but the quality is about the same as those Japanese sticker printing kiosks. Not too bad we must say.
If we have US$149 to spare, we’ll be getting the Dell Wasabi in a jiffy. The price tag is slightly expensive for a device like this but we still think that it’s worth it since the only consumables you need are ZINK papers. Let’s see if Dell will have more printers like that in the future.
