Some of us remember fondly those nights where we stayed up in the middle of the night, furiously working on our college assignments. Those times, the best companions are always the computer, a pair of headphones and the steadfast printer ready to print out our night’s effort.
Normally, what we seek in these type of printers are, firstly, the form factor, followed by its print speed and quality and sometimes even its printing noises, if we’re bunking with a roommate. The Samsung ML-1660 monochrome laser printer is one such printer made to perform these tasks.
For starters, the ML-1660 sports a really compact design; at 341 x 224 x 184mm in dimensions and 4.3kg in weight, it can fit nicely on any desktop. The feeder tray folds downwards and can be extended further to A5 in size, while the output tray folds out on the top. The printer hooks up to the computer via USB, and setup is simple enough with the resources CD.
When it comes to printing, the ML-1660 manages to pull a few surprises. Firstly, the print speed is pretty good. In our test, we managed 17 pages per minute printing word documents, while printing pictures only bump it down to 15ppm. The print quality is decent, though the pictures aren’t as sharp as we hope, but overall the performance is good.
Samsung claims that the ML-1660 runs quietly, a claim that might not be entirely off, but we still find that it could be quieter. It is fine during printings, but the initials and subsequent whirr can be quite loud.
There aren’t many features to go with the compact nature of the printer, but we found it very convenient to be able to use its print-screen feature. All a user has to do is press on the button and whatever’s on your computer screen will print itself. It’s pretty useful, and a small but nifty addition to the printer.
So if you, like us, have those nights where that three essential desktop companions are vital, you’ll do well considering the Samsung ML-1660 as an option. It has compactness in built, good print performance and while not quite so quite, makes up for its print-screen feature.
