Sony’s new mid-range DSLR, the A350, has just made it to our shores, and boasts a number of unique features for a DSLR, most notably a so-called “Quick Autofocus Live View” feature and a new high-resolution 14.2-megapixel sensor.
While various competing DSLRs have had Live View, Sony’s implementation of the feature differs from most other makers as it offers autofocus speeds as fast as when NOT using Live View.
The A350 achieves this by having a secondary image sensor and a “pentamirror tilt system” in the viewfinder housing, giving you a full-time Live View mode without the shooting delays and autofocus slowdowns found in other systems, Sony said.
Other interesting features include a 2.7in LCD screen which tilts up and down (but not rotated sideways), 1200-zone metering sensor, ISO settings from 100 to 3200, Bionz image processing engine, D-Range Optimiser and Sony’s SteadyShot image stabilisation built-in to the body of the camera.
Also soon to be available is the Alpha A300, which has all the features of the A350 but it comes with a 10.2-megapixel sensor and a slightly slower continuous shooting speed of 2.5-frames-per-second compared with the A350’s 3-frames-per-second.
The Alpha A350 comes with the DT 18-70mm f3.5-f5.6 kit lens. Sony said that the A300 is due to hit the stores “soon” with pricing yet to be determined at press time.
