Sony Ericsson’s Walkman series of phones are known for their music-centric features and/or large storage capacities and are targeted to the mobile user who wants to carry their music around without lugging another dedicated device. The W960i can be said to be a Walkman version of the P1i. It comes in a thin-and-wide form factor with a large 240×320 touch-screen and well-space T9 keyboard. While it doesn’t have a metal body like the P1i, the W960i looks good in its ‘black vinyl’ finish. There is an additional touch-key area between the screen and keyboard which serves as dedicated music keys when in Walkman mode. On the side of the W960i, you will find Sony’s familiar Jog-dial. This comes in handy for scrolling around selection lists and menus with one hand. Missing, however, is the ‘back’ key on the Jog-dial. Instead, there is a dedicated back key as part of the keypad.
The W960i runs on UIQ, which is Sony Ericsson’s flavour of SymbianOS. While there is no memory card expansion slot, the W960i comes with a whopping 8GB of built-in storage space. With that much space, you can carry a lot of music with you.
Music is the key feature of any Walkman phone, and the W960i is no different. A dedicated Walkman key in the middle of the keypad brings up the Walkman application where you can browse and play your music collection. The Jog-dial comes in handy here for scrolling through tracks. Returning to the home-screen will leave your music playing in the background, and the track information is still displayed there. Besides music, the W960i also handles MP4/3GP video playback quite well. It is capable of playing video at full resolution up to 30fps without lagging.
The list of features goes on to include an auto-focusing 3.2 megapixel camera. This is a premium feature compared to standard pinhole phone cameras and produces great results. A second camera on the front is for 3G video conferencing.
To top it all off, the W960i is equipped with WiFi for wireless web-browsing and media streaming. This rounds off the W960i’s impressive feature set and makes the phone a definite recommended buy.
