A few months back there was buzz that Sony Ericsson had signed up with Microsoft to provide a mobile phone based on the Windows Mobile operating system. Well, it’s a rumor no more, folks, as Sony Ericsson has officially announced the Xperia X1, the first in a new series of Windows Mobile-based smartphones from the company.

However, the Xperia X1 isn’t just another generic Windows Mobile phone, as Sony Ericsson has completely revamped and turned it into a sexy, animated and orientation-aware icon-based interface a lá Apple iPhone.
Details of this new so-called Xperia panel interface are still pretty sketchy at the moment, but on the hardware front, the Xperia X1 has 3G with HSUPA support, which stands for High-Speed Uplink Packet Access and is similar to HSDPA but with faster upload speeds.
It also has a very high-resolution touch-sensitive 3in 800 x 480pixel screen, an “optical joystick” (which we take to mean a touch-sensitive directional pad), handwriting recognition, a 3.2-megapixel digital camera and most interestingly, a slide-out Qwerty keypad.
The wireless features are also extensive – there’s Bluetooth with A2DP, WiFi and yes, “aGPS” which is slightly more advanced than a plain-Jane GPS in that it can achieve a GPS lock faster.
Since this is a Windows Mobile phone, expect to have the usual Microsoft Mobile Office suite and Windows Media Player bundle.
The Xperia X1 has 400MB of memory (although nothing is said about whether this is ROM or RAM or a combination of both) and comes with a microSD slot if you want to increase storage.
The Xperia X1 is scheduled to be released in the second half of this year.
