When we first got the XMI X-mini II, we were wondering what the heck it was. We then found out that it’s a portable speaker and we assumed that it will not sound as nice as regular speakers since it’s so small and insignificant. Boy, we were wrong! We were so very wrong!
Built in a cute little sphere shaped rubbery case, the X-mini II looked just like a stress ball, which gives you an ideas of its size. Smack right in the middle on top is the speaker itself in red and there are a few controls on the side of the speakers, namely the power slide, volume control wheel, the mini USB charging port and a regular 3.5mm audio port. The 3.5mm port can also be used to daisy chain a bunch of X-mini IIs to create a huge chain of speakers that will generate enough noise to wake the whole neighbourhood.
The X-mini II has its own 3.5mm audio cable hidden underneath it. However, the cable, excluding the plug, is only 3.5 inches long. This means that it doesn’t matter what device you plug the X-mini II with, it has to stick with it. That is when the 3.5mm audio port we mentioned earlier came in useful. With a twist, the speaker separates into two halves with a spring type rubber in the middle. We guess this is to reduce the vibration of the speakers when it is playing.
Vibration? What is vibration? This is where the interesting part is. The speaker is loud, very loud. When the volume is tuned to maximum, the speaker vibrates, that’s how powerful this tiny little thing is. Despite its loudness, the audio quality is maintained and there were no cracking noise from the speaker.
The X-mini II managed about 10 hours of non-stop music with the volume at about 50% level. The battery life is not too bad for a small device like this.
We love the XMI X-mini II for its funky design and superb audio quality, not to mention ultra loud as well. Battery life was also good when we tested it but the short 3.5mm audio cable was disappointing though.
Pros: Very loud, great audio quality
Cons: Short 3.5mm audio cable
