With the crime rate at a sky high level all around the world, one has to think of something to protect their homes, or at least make it less “favourable” to burglars. For this the Linksys Wireless G Internet Home Monitoring Camera is the perfect equipment you need.
Unlike conventional CCTV’s, this Linksys camera is shaped like an oversized webcam with a large enough base to be used as a cup mat. The neck of the camera is adjustable, enabling you to position the camera in any angle you want. Linksys is also kind enough to “pre drill” two holes at the base, letting you mount the camera on the wall or ceiling.
At the front, you’ll see the camera lens, an LED power indicator and a tiny hole which serves as a microphone. Didn’t we tell you that the camera is like a webcam? There are two ports at the back of the camera, namely the power port and the Ethernet port.
Connecting the camera using the bundled software needs a little bit of tinkering. The installation wizard worked fine with Ethernet but when it comes to wireless, we had problems. For some reason, the wizard wasn’t able to find any connected camera in our network, even though it’s connected wirelessly as shown in the routers and the only one that worked perfectly with the wizard was the Linksys WRT-610N router. We had to mess around with the advanced settings to get it connected wirelessly.
The image quality was good enough but the noise was unbearable. Hey, it’s a security camera, what do you expect? The software allows you to configure up to 9 cameras. You can also set the camera to record only when it detects movements.
The best part is, you can log in from a remote site and view what’s happening in your house through the camera’s lens. It does lag a bit though but we blame that on our “superior” broadband connection speeds.
We hit a tiny wall during the installation of the Linksys Wireless G Internet Home Monitoring Camera but everything was smooth from then onwards. We like that the camera records sound as well since a lot of security cameras don’t do that. Let’s make it easier to install, shall we?
